Stock Up For Spring

April is finally here, which means it is time to stock up for spring. Gardening gloves and décor, spades, saplings, soil and seedlings, we’ve got all the spring-has-sprung essentials at Oakridge Nursery, so let’s get it started! Officially.

With Earth Day and Arbor Day both falling this month, we are inspired to talk about trees, trees and more trees; and it couldn’t be timelier because spring is the best time of year to plant a tree. By planting in April, the sapling has a full year to grow, which allows it to establish a strong root system before winter arrives.

In South Dakota, Blue Spruce and Flowering Crabs are the most popular tree varieties. At Oakridge, we carry all of these and more, and if you were to ask one of our specialists we’d recommend getting a couple different types if you’re planting more than one in your yard. Diversifying eliminates the risk of disease, like Emerald Ash Borer and Dutch Elm Disease, so you can enjoy your beautiful new trees for years to come!

Simply answer the following questions and you’ll be on your way to buying the perfect new tree.

  1. Where do you want to plant your tree?
Will it be in the sun or shade? Does that area stay wet or dry?
  1. How big do you want this tree to get?
Do you have a larger or smaller spot for it in your landscaping?
  1. What time of year do you want this tree to show it’s most vibrant color?
Are you dreaming of a spring flowering tree? A summer full-bodied tree? Or a fall golden tree?

After thinking these questions through, come chat with us at Oakridge! Our specialists will help you select the right variety for your outdoor oasis, and they will answer any other questions you may have. Like…

Q: How often should I water my new tree?
A: After you plant your new tree we recommend a deep watering once every ten days. If it’s a new yard with irrigation, you’ll have to ensure it doesn’t stay too drenched for it to grow properly.

Q: How far apart do I plant multiple new trees?
A: It all depends on the size and type. If the tree will grow to be 30 feet wide, then it should be planted 30 feet from other trees. If you select Evergreens, for example, they should be planted farther apart because this variety doesn’t do well if they’re crowded.

Come celebrate spring with us out at Oakridge! Our trees are the highest quality in the area, and our expertise is free. Below are a handful of our April featured products that pair perfectly with a new tree. These items won’t last long – stop and shop today!
